The vocal scores include one German edition by Bote & Bock, Berlin (187-?, pl. no. 7413, 7416-7444), the German text by Carl Treumann, and an English edition by Boosey, London (1883) with the English text by Farnie. The orchestra parts consist of several sets of manuscript parts, many fragmentary. Nineteen parts are for interpolated numbers by G. Kerker; eighteen parts are fragmentary additions and insertions in the music. These are contained in six large envelopes labelled "1945 production," one carrying the indication "Dorati version." Three small, sealed envelopes contain miscellaneous fragmentary insertions and are included in this set. The vocal parts and chorus parts are in German manuscript or holograph. Several carry performers' names. The promptbook is an annotated libretto by Boosey, London (1883) in English, with interleaved pages of manuscript stage directions. The English text is by Farnie. The dialogue parts are all in German. All are manuscript except for three parts which are mimeoed. Several parts carry pereformers' names and one set bears the stamp of the Deutsches Theater. The lyrics are in German, printed by Bote & Bock, Berlin (1869). The German is by Carl Treumann.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman . Henri Meilhac was a French dramatist, who often collaborated with Ludovic Halévy.
